National Teen Driver Safety Awareness

Miami Beach – CityDebate.Com – November 1, 2009 -  Florida recognizes that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of teen deaths in this country.  In keeping with “National Teen Driver Safety Awareness”, the Miami Beach Police Department will be displaying a wrecked vehicle involved in a deadly crash in front of Miami Beach Senior High School, today during their dismissal.

     The following are some of the statistics for the 2008 calendar year involving teen drivers:

• In Florida, 18-year-old drivers have the highest rate of crash involvement; while 19-year-old drivers have, the highest crash related deaths.
• Nationwide 37% of teen accidents resulting in death were speed related
• Nationwide 59% of passengers ages 10 to 24 were not wearing seat belts
• In the US, teens make up 6.3 % of the population; however, teens are responsible for 14 % of the total number of traffic related deaths.
• Distractions are deadly for teen drivers and are the number 1 cause for accidents involving new drivers.

     The high fatality and low seat belt use rates among teens and young adults are why National Teen Driver Safety Week was created.

     The message is clear “always buckle up, day and night, insist everyone in your car is buckled up, and to avoid in car distractions.”
