Miami Beach February 2006 - Esslinger-Wooten-Maxwell (EWM) senior vice president Nelson Gonzalez has listed 5020 North Bay Road, once the private home of Carl Fisher, the developer of Miami Beach, for $40 million - the highest price ever listed for a home in Miami-Dade County.

Built in 1927 by architect August Geiger, who along with Addison Mizner was responsible for many of South Florida's early stately homes, the 20,000 square-foot bay front estate features 12 bedroom and 19 baths, and is situated on a 68,642 square-foot lot.

The current owners, Todd Michael Glaser, Chad Oppenheim and Armin Mattli, purchased the estate in late 2005. Renovation plans for the Mar-a-Lago style home are underway and include the addition of two two-story guest villas, each with one bedroom plus living area; a carriage house; a poolside cabana; and a 1,400 square-foot loggia with fireplace.

Oppenheim, a world-renowned architect, plans to maintain the integrity of the home's Italian Renaissance-style design consistent with the additions. The current owners will also enlarge the already-massive master suite, upgrade the home's appliances, replace its windows and air-conditioning, heating and electrical systems, and re-landscape the property with foliage, fountains and pathways. The renovations are expected to be completed in early summer 2006.

The highlight of the property is its original 85 foot-high observation tower, which offers views of Miami Beach, Miami and Biscayne Bay. Fisher added the tower to seduce buyers, inviting them to select their parcel of land from it.

In fact, Fisher even had a bathroom included so potential buyers would not have an excuse to leave the tower before choosing a lot.

"This home is truly one-of-a-kind," says Gonzalez. "It is a home for someone who wants a grand estate with historical significance, but also wants to be able to turn the corner and have the excitement and culture of Miami at their fingertips."

The estate also features a wine cellar; expansive outdoor terrace; bank-size hidden safe; a 2,000+ square-foot master suite with a separate 430 square-foot terrace; street-front privacy wall; 270 feet of waterfront - the longest of all the private homes in the city; and a massive dock built to accommodate a large yacht.

Interior details include coffered ceilings, mantelpieces made of carved stone, and original wood floors, which have remained in excellent condition through the years due to carpet and rug coverings.
