Miami Beach, June 2007 - On June 19, South Florida pilots Kristen Jurn and Tamra Sheffman, will lift off into the open sky to compete in the 31st Annual Air Race Classic (ARC); the longest all-women transcontinental
air race in the world, with a history that dates back more than 70 years.
The Miami Beach flying duo, Tamra Sheffman and Kristin Jurn are taking to the air in their private Cessna 182 to compete in the 2007 Air Race Classic, June 19-22, 2007.
Sheffman and Jurn are preparing for the annual all-female pilot air race - historically the longest in the world. The very first Women's Air Derby was in 1929 and the enthusiasm continues. This year’s Air Race Classic is 2,500 statute miles starting in Oklahoma City, OK (PWA) and finishes in St. John, New
Brunswick, Canada (CYSJ).
Air Race Teams consist of two female pilots flying a course for four days under VFR (visual flight rules) weather restrictions during daylight hours. Navigational skills and experience savvy will determine the leaders during the four days and define the winners at the finish line in New Brunswick.
Tamra and Kristen are both instrument rated private pilots with various flying experiences and begin their adventure at Miami Executive Aviation Center, Opa Locka Airport, Miami, Florida. They will be racing a single engine Cessna 182 airplane.
The Air Race gets widespread publicity and encourages women and young girls to learn to fly.
Taking off from Opa Locka (OPF), Florida in their single-engine 1976 Cessna 182l (N37TJ), they are the only team from the Miami area to participate in the 31st annual all-woman transcontinental Air Race Classic. The high-flying pilots are both career women and active in the community – Kristin Jurn is
in the process of launching Jets Unlimited, aviation brokerage and Tamra Sheffman is a Miami Beach REALTOR®.
The annual event also gives pilots the opportunity to hone their skills while involving thousands of participants through sponsorship, ground and air assistance crews, time-keeping, officiating and as spectators.
They are seeking individual and corporate sponsors and promise “high” exposure for products and services, including logos on their plane, press coverage, flyers and brochure distribution at the stopping points along the route
“Pilots must ‘play the elements’ of altitude, favorable winds and clear blue sky while trying to make the perfect cross-country flight,” says Sheffman.
Two woman pilots comprise a team, flying VFR (Visual Flight Rules) in daylight hours for nearly 2,500 miles. Contestants have four days to fly approximately 2500 miles, covering 22 states with designated nightly stopovers.
Each plane is assigned a handicap speed with the goal of having the actual ground speed as far over the handicap as possible. Handicaps are based on design and horsepower, with winners determined by how much they exceed their groundspeed handicap. Altitude, wind, pilot skill, weather, and aircraft
condition are among the factors that influence the final score, with wise decision-making and good cockpit management key elements.
Thirty years, 69.139 miles, and 1159 teams later, the Air Race Classic remains a venue for competitive flying. With dozens of aviatrix climbing into their cockpits and racing safely cross-country through the summer sky, the race is recognized for both its keen competition and camaraderie..
