The Beaches News Briefs and Meetings

July 4,  - August 31,  2007

Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club

In addition to its weekly guests, the Breakfast Club will also focus on a particular topic of interest to residents, from new city projects, such as the expansion of the Lincoln Road Mall to Alton Road; the reconstruction of the 10th Street Auditorium and reconfiguration of Lummus Park; and the removal of the Lincoln Road parking lot west of Washington Ave. to create of a new park for the New World Symphony; to exploring a wide range of “good government” issues, such as abolishing the “group” designations now used for electing Commissioners; considering a change to “district representation”, whereby two commissioners would be elected from each of our three communities (North Beach, South Beach, and Mid Beach); and changing Miami Beach to a “strong Mayor” form of government, whereby the mayor is the city manager.

Issues beyond the borders of Miami Beach will also get attention, such as the proposed tunnel from the Port of Miami to Watson Island, already approved by the state, and the proposed downtown Miami baseball stadium to be built on county land and with county money.  Also to be discussed at upcoming meetings will be the proposal from the state legislature to replace property taxes with an increase in state sales tax.

The Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club has long been know for it’s advocacy of good government and it’s willingness to take on controversial subjects, and this year’s series of meetings will certainly be a continuation of that tradition.

The Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club meets at 8:30 am to 10:00 am every Tuesday at David's Cafe II 1654 Meridian Avenue.

Come and discuss what ever is on your mind. Send comments, suggestions or speaker recommendations to “The Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club”)
