Miami Beach Residents Are Shocked And Offended By Campaign Sign!

Editors Note: Luckily, in our great city of Miami Beach there are not many “jerks” like this person. City Debate thought long and hard about running this piece and decided to run it to expose him for what he is to our neighbors. His name is Raymond “Bill” Smatt he lives at 4760 Alton Road Miami Beach. The picture on this page is of Bill “Homophobic” Smatt. Remember his face, for with a mind like his he surly is dangerous.

Miami Beach July 2007 - This week, a huge, blatantly homophobic sign heralding an alleged candidate for Miami Beach mayor appeared banner-like at a home on Alton Road.

The sign and advertised campaign web site assert that God made "Adam and Eve" not "Adam and Steve"; and employs sadly classic code words and phrases to further advance anti-gay prejudice.

I believe that the sign and sentiment are an abomination. Further I do not feel these sentiments are representative of the of citizens of Miami Beach; however we all must remain vigilant as hate and discrimination have and continue to be used to divide our community and our country.

This illustrates that no matter how far the city and its residents have evolved that hate and prejudice are unfortunately alive and still a political tool for some. Ethical government, civil rights legislation and a resident friendly neighborhood focus - three hallmarks of the current administration - remain under assault. This also demonstrates why future city leaders should have a record of support and, more importantly, action on behalf of these core principles of our great city.
